Due to the particularity of the natural cellulose structure, cellulose itself has no ability to react with etherifying agents. However, after being treated with a swelling agent, the strong hydrogen bonds between and within the molecular chains are destroyed, and the activity of the hydroxyl groups is released to become reactive alkali cellulose. After reacting with an etherifying agent, the -OH group is converted into an -OR group to obtain cellulose ether.
